If you're building an AI receptionist for a local business, here's a useful checkpoint before you pitch it:
Make five test calls. Then check what actually happened.
A smooth demo is a start. These calls help you find the gaps before a customer does.
1. The easy booking
Ask for a service the business actually offers. Use test contact details and make a test appointment. Then check the calendar, customer record, and confirmation. Did the right details land in the right place?
2. The question it can't answer
Ask about a price, service, or policy you haven't given it. Does it admit the gap and offer a clear next step, or make something up? Fix that before a real caller hears it.
3. The after-hours call
Call when the business is closed. Check the hours it gives and what it promises next. If nobody is available, the caller should know when and how to get help.
4. The change of plans
Change the date halfway through. Correct your phone number. Ask to cancel. If your setup can't handle a request, it needs a clear fallback. Inspect the calendar and notes afterward, then clean up your test bookings.
5. The “I need a person” call
Ask for a human. Test the actual transfer or callback process, including what happens if nobody answers. Did it capture a usable request? Does the right person receive it?
Keep a simple scorecard: what you asked, what happened, what needs fixing.
Fix one issue. Run that call again. Save the result.
Now you've got something specific to show an owner: the calls your setup handles, its limits, and where their team takes over.
